Xianqi is the Chinese interpretation of the ancient game, and the pieces do really sound like those that would be in. Xianqi, or Chinese Chess, originally developed in India before spreading across the world. In modern times, it is mostly known as (elephant) to Hindi-speaking players, while East Asian chess games such as xiangqi and shogi have names also meaning chariot () for the same. However, in many other languages, the name refers to a tower ( tour in French, Torre in Spanish, Turm in German), a ship (ладья or ladya in Russian), or cannon (топ or top in Bulgarian. I believe that the chess pieces are supposed to constitute an army I'll try to give a breakdown of how each individual name evolved. The Persian word rukh means 'chariot', and the corresponding piece in the original Indian version, chaturanga, has the name ratha (meaning 'chariot'). In English, the modern name for the Rook comes from the Persian word for chariot, rukh. Chinese chess pieces are usually flat and resemble those used in checkers, with pieces differentiated by writing their names on the flat surface. As the chariot was a powerful war machine in ancient times, it should come as no surprise that the Rook, with its long-range movement, was the most powerful piece in early versions of chess. The movement of the Rook has remained unchanged since its beginnings as a chariot, but the name varies in different languages. It may look like a castle, but it is called the Rook! The Rook is a powerful piece that often makes itself known toward the end of the game when it can be unleashed to devastating effect. When chess was first invented in India, the piece in the corner represented the chariot on the ancient battlefield. At the start, each player controls sixteen pieces: one king, one queen, two rooks, two bishops, two knights, and eight pawns. It is played on a chessboard with 64 squares arranged in an 8×8 grid. It is used by most books, magazines, and newspapers. Chess is an abstract strategy game that involves no hidden information and no elements of chance. 37 An alternative origin theory contends that chess arose from xiangqi or a predecessor thereof, existing in China since the 3rd century BC. Algebraic notation is the standard method for recording and describing the moves in a game of chess. It is based on a system of coordinates to uniquely identify each square on the board. Persian War Chariots were heavily armoured, carrying a driver and at least one ranged-weapon bearer, such as an archer. Chinese chess pieces are usually flat and resemble those used in checkers, with pieces differentiated by writing their names on the flat surface. The pawn can capture the opponents chess piece by moving a step diagonally. The pawns are like the foot soldiers in a battle, taking up the front row. Only on the first move do you have the choice of moving it two steps forward. Originally, the rook symbolized a chariot. 1) Pawn: The eight pawn pieces of a chess player move one step forward from the second move onwards. In chess the castle is a major piece, now usually called a rook.
